Glasgow University Music Club was formed in 1954 by Frederick Rimmer to nurture the members' interest in Chamber Music. Frederick Rimmer was a Professor of Music at University of Glasgow from 1966 to 1980 after graduating with BMus, BA and MA. He served in the 11th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers in the Middle East during the Second World War.

After teaching in Cambridge he came to Glasgow and was appointed Organist and Senior Lecturer.

Alongside his academic achievements he musically showed his talent as the director of Scottish Opera and also served on the BBC's Scottish Music Advisory Committee. He endeavoured to help the Music Archive in Scotland and therefore was the Director and awarded a CBE in 1980.
